Reiki for Autism
Reiki is a Japanese energy based therapy that promotes healing and well being. A Reiki trained practitioner uses their hands to transmit energy to the receiver.
Reiki can help calm the fear associated with over-active behaviours brought about ny changes and social interactions. It may also reduce muscle tightness that can bring about stress. Reiki is an effective therapy which can help your child with many challenges and enable them to gain confidence and self esteem.
Reiki is balancing and calming by inducing the ' relaxation response'. This helps achieve internal harmony by settling down and regulating the energy levels within the chakras of the physical body, mind and soul. Difficulties with getting to sleep and staying asleep may be positively effected even after the initial treatment.
Reiki is natural and safe and can be done without touching your child who may be extremely sensitive to touch. This may be as a result of hyperactive sensory perceptions, complex behaviours and a shyness of new people. Reiki may be giving in close proximity as they play and may even be done when they are asleep.
Research in the Autism/Asperger's Digest magazine in 2000 found that
"Preliminary results [of Reiki] are encouraging, especially when the parents are taught Reiki 1 & 2 along with visualisation in between formal appointments with therapists. The use of Reiki by parents & therapists appears to encourage communication ,especially non verbal communication. Children are calmer and less self stimulated."
Current studies show considerable changes in autistic children who receive Reiki as a soothing and holistic practice. Reiki is not a cure but may assist in making some behavioural changes. Reiki works well in conjunction with conventional medical treatments as a complimentary treatment.
